Meet Angela..

Mum to two girls, wife, and proud owner of a retired greyhound, Angela first discovered embroidery after receiving an embroidery kit for Christmas. What began as a simple creative hobby soon became something far more powerful – a calm, mindful escape during a difficult season. When she joined Bloom as a complete beginner in 2025, she was just hoping to learn a few stitches… but her journey since then has been incredible to watch!

Meet Angela, member of Bloom Embroidery Academy - the online embroidery membership for stitchers.

And really – there is something so special about watching someone discover embroidery at exactly the moment they need it most 🥹🤎.

When Angela joined Bloom – our online embroidery membership – in March 2025, she described herself as a “total beginner” – mostly because she only knew a few stitches, and didn’t have much confidence to dive in.

But, less than a year later, her growth inside our online embroidery community honestly makes me beam with pride! She’s mastering long and short stitch, confidently completing monthly challenges that encourage her personal creativity and inspiration, and is even dreaming about starting her own embroidery business in the near future.

This is what steady, supported growth inside an online embroidery membership can look like – and honestly, I’m so proud of her 🥹🤎 It’s exactly why Bloom Embroidery Academy exists – to support people just like Angela. 🌸

Starting Embroidery as a Complete Beginner

Angela first picked up embroidery after being gifted a kit at Christmas, she was so excited to get started with a new hobby. That initial experience left a real impression on her.

“I really enjoyed learning the stitches and producing something I could be proud of.”

That spark of pride – the feeling of making something with your hands that you actually want to show people – is something so many of us recognise from our own early stitching days, right? But for Angela, embroidery quickly became something so much deeper than a new hobby to explore.

Outside of stitching, life was feeling heavy. Her Rheumatoid Arthritis was worsening, affecting how much she was able to work both physically and mentally. It was in the middle of that really difficult season that she found what she didn’t know she was looking for.

“I noticed that embroidery had become a place of calm for my mind, an escape, and the medicine I needed.”

That’s why Bloom has never been just about stitches and patterns. More importantly, it’s about creating a calm, mindful space where creativity can support you – a place to come back to, especially when life feels uncertain or hard. Angela’s story is a beautiful reminder of why that matters so much!

The Frustration of Trying to Learn Embroidery Online Alone

Before finding Bloom, Angela had done what most of us do when we want to learn something new. She turned to YouTube. And sure, don’t get me wrong, YouTube can be a good resource for learning a new skill. But unsurprisingly, Angela’s experience of this was more frustrating than helpful.

“I tried watching YouTube videos but found them very fast or lacking in description. I was fast getting sick of pausing and rewinding! And there was no structure to my learning.”

This is something I hear sooo often, and honestly, it makes complete sense. YouTube is brilliant for so many things, but for learning embroidery properly? It can feel like trying to put together a puzzle when half the pieces are missing, and you have no clue what picture it’s supposed to be at the end. You might find a great tutorial on one stitch, then a completely different style of teaching for another, with no real thread connecting it all (pun very much intended 🤣).

Without a clear structure, it’s so hard to know what to learn next, whether you’re doing things in the right order, or how all the techniques actually fit together into a bigger picture.

That lack of structure is exactly what our online embroidery membership is designed to solve, and it was something Angela recognised the moment she found Bloom.

“It’s such great value for money and has everything you need in the right order to progress your skills!”

That phrase – in the right order – is really the Bloom Roadmap in action. Inside the membership, embroidery stitches and techniques are carefully sequenced so that beginners aren’t overwhelmed and intermediate stitchers aren’t stuck or bored. You always know where you are, where you’ve been, and where you’re headed next.

Angela has learned advanced embroidery stitches as pictured here, plus advanced techniques like watercolour for those beautiful translucent wings!
Another example is the 3D padded satin stitch and use of felt applique – all techniques and skills Angela learned inside Bloom Embroidery Academy.

How the Bloom Roadmaps Helped Her Improve Her Embroidery Skills

Angela had first come across Bloom through a Free Embroidery Challenge in March 2025, and it was the clarity of the learning path ahead that encouraged her to join.

“The clear roadmaps of learning were a big draw. I wanted to learn, progress and produce quality embroidery pieces.”

And the progress that followed was real, consistent, and genuinely exciting to witness! Angela worked through the Roadmaps steadily and began doing the monthly challenges alongside them. That combination of structured skill-building and regular creative prompts is where I see members grow the most. The Roadmaps give you the foundation; the monthly outline challenges give you somewhere to put all you’ve learned into practice.

“Bloom has definitely improved my embroidery skills! My technique has improved so much! I’m doing the monthly challenges and working through the roadmaps.”

That’s not vague praise of me or the membership – that’s someone describing actual, tangible skill progression that they’ve achieved. And the best part? It happened because Angela showed up, practised consistently, and trusted the process. Bloom gave her the structure; but she did the work!

Angela said: “Finished this one last night. I remember being in awe of this pattern when I saw people share it soon after I joined. It’s one of those I look at and think – that’s so clever! And now here I am doing it too!”

Mastering Long & Short Stitch and Thread Painting inside our Embroidery Membership

This ‘Hummingbird’ pattern is the perfect embroidery pattern for practicing the long + short stitch! She’s framed it + is displaying it proudly in her home.

One of my favourite parts of Angela’s story is her journey with thread painting, because it’s such a perfect example of how quickly things can shift when you have the right guidance at the right time.

When she first encountered thread painting inside Bloom, she wasn’t sure it was something she’d ever be able to do.

It can look incredibly intricate and intimidating from the outside, and Angela’s reaction when she first saw it was completely understandable! I remember feeling that exact way early in my embroidery journey.

But honestly? Angela amazed me at how quickly she picked up this brand new embroidery technique!

I’d never even heard of thread painting until I joined Bloom, and even then when I saw it I looked in awe and never thought I’d be able to have the patience to work in such a detailed way.”

But five months after joining, something clicked for Angela – and the result genuinely took her by surprise! And, she even pinpointed the exact moment the technique really came together for her:

“Just 5 months after joining I’d mastered my long and short stitch and completed projects that blended colours beautifully. I couldn’t believe it! Sophie’s tips in the 5 Day Threadpainting Workshop made ALL the difference.

Five months. Five months! From total beginner to blending colours beautifully in a technique that’s tricky for even experienced embroiderers.

And honestly, this is exactly why our embroidery workshops like this one exist. For taking a single embroidery stitch or technique, and slowing it wayyyy down, breaking it into bite-sized, stress-free steps, and making it super easy to learn.

Angela has gone on to stitch more and more of the thread painting technique across her projects. Here’s her ‘Fun Florals’ PDF Pattern from Bloom’s Libraries.

That’s the power of detailed, specific technique guidance inside a structured embroidery membership. Small individual tips that compound, and learning them at exactly the right moment, can completely transform how a stitch feels in your needle.

Finally Feeling Proud of Her Satin Stitch

Satin stitch is another one of those embroidery stitches that can feel endlessly frustrating before something finally clicks! It looks deceptively simple from a distance, but getting it to lie flat, neat, and smooth is something that trips up so many stitchers – beginners and intermediate alike. For Angela, it had been a real source of frustration before she joined Bloom.

“I’ve conquered tricky stitches and perfected stitches, such as satin stitch, that I initially found very frustrating. I’m now really proud of my satin! And that’s thanks to the little tips inside Bloom.”

(She even shared the 2 specific techniques she learned that made the difference for her... But hey, you’ll have to get your name on our early bird waitlist to find out what those are! 😉)

That’s not just improvement, though, that’s genuine understanding of her own craft. She knows why it works now, not just that it works. All of our tutorials inside Bloom give you this level of understanding, because it’s that kind of knowledge stays with you!

The Power of an Online Embroidery Membership + Community

Alongside all the technical growth, something else shifted for Angela too – and it’s something that I think is just as important as any embroidery stitch or technique!

“I love being part of the community! Sharing my work with others who are just as into learning embroidery is such a confidence boost and so encouraging.”

It’s true, there’s something really special about sharing your work with people who genuinely get it! With like-minded makers who understand why you spent three evenings on a tiny patch of satin stitch, who celebrate with you when it finally comes together, and who make you feel like your creativity matters. That sense of belonging, of being seen and encouraged by a group of crazily supportive women, is something you simply cannot replicate by watching videos alone.

An example of some lovely, positive comments on Angela’s progress and finished projects from our fab community of like-minded makers!

For Angela, the community became a real lifeline during a tricky part of her life. Bloom gave her somewhere to turn.

“Bloom gave me a focus when my health – both physically and mentally – took a dive. I’m so grateful I found the community at that time. The encouragement from the community is wonderful… Posting every finished project gives me an enormous sense of achievement and pride.”

Angela's finished 'New Beginnings' embroidery pattern from Bloom Embroidery Academy's 'outline challenge'. A challenge inside the embroidery membership to choose your own embroidery stitches and colours.

And now, less than a year on, she’s come so far that she’s the one welcoming newer members in and sharing her own journey with them:

“I also love seeing new beginners come in and telling them how much I’ve progressed in such a short time and that they are going to love it!”

From overwhelmed beginner to confident, encouraging member. That transformation is everything 🥹🌸

Why Bloom Felt Like Great Value for Money

Angela also really reflected on the depth and breadth of what’s available inside the membership. Her words say it better than I ever could!

“It’s such great value for money and has everything you need in the right order to progress your skills, not to mention the fantastic additional courses and Friday Flourish content you have always included. I honestly couldn’t ask for any more.”

That’s the beauty of learning embroidery through a membership like Bloom. It’s not one course with a single finish line. It’s ongoing, ever-growing access to Roadmaps, technique tutorials, monthly challenges, modern embroidery patterns, workshops, Friday Flourish content (AKA something brand new every single Friday!), and a warm, supportive community of people who love this craft as much as you do. And as Angela so perfectly put it:

“Even when I have completed all of the road maps there is still more. More patterns, more workshops, more monthly challenges.”

Growth doesn’t stop – it just keeps opening up into something bigger.

What’s Next on Her Embroidery Journey?

When Angela first joined Bloom, her hopes were relatively simple: to get good at embroidery, and to one day have the confidence to produce her own designs. Less than a year later, that goal doesn’t just feel possible; it feels close.

“I hoped that I would learn and get good at embroidery and have the confidence to produce my own designs one day. Now, I can definitely see myself producing my own original work one day.”

And she’s even started to think bigger than that:

“Maybe in the next few months, I could have a new embroidery business of my own…”

From total beginner to business-minded creative in under a year. Angela, I am so unbelievably proud of you 🤎🪡✨
